7 Key Lessons Learned from Our Cross-Country Move and Major Life Changes

After a recent cross-country move from California to Atlanta and a myriad of changes, I'm excited to share the lessons my husband and I have learned.

Whether you're grappling with big decisions or navigating the complexities of family life, these insights could make all the difference. Let's dive in!

1. Keep Each Other in the Loop

Communicating effectively is fundamental. During our move, my husband and I realized that failing to stay updated on each other’s schedules and plans led to a lot of miscommunication. Establishing a routine check-in, whether nightly or weekly, ensures that both partners are aligned and reduces unnecessary friction. One great tool we've found helpful is the Skylight calendar, which integrates with Google Calendar and keeps us organized and on the same page.

2. Discuss Your Goals

Aligning on goals helps you work together rather than at cross-purposes. Take the time to discuss what each of you wants to accomplish. Daily routines can often lead to misunderstandings if you assume the other person shares your vision. Open dialogues about goals, even if they differ, enable problem-solving and ensure both partners feel heard and supported.

3. Consider What Everyone is Dealing With

Life changes, especially major moves, are stressful for everyone involved. Acknowledging the emotional and physical strain on each family member fosters empathy and patience. It’s crucial to offer grace and remember that everyone is doing their best amidst the chaos. This approach minimizes unnecessary conflicts and fosters a supportive home environment.

4. Notice Where the Kids Can Step Up

If you're feeling overwhelmed, consider involving your kids in age-appropriate responsibilities. Giving them chores not only reduces your burden but also promotes their independence and contribution to the family. Using tools like the Skylight calendar can help kids keep track of their tasks, making them feel like active participants in the household.

5. Be Intentional About Connecting

Connections are the backbone of any strong relationship. Whether it’s a simple morning date, a walk, or just sitting at the table together, these moments strengthen your bond. Micro-connections, like sending a thoughtful message or a quick hug, build a bridge between more substantial interactions, ensuring you stay connected even amid busy schedules.

6. Celebrate Your Wins

Celebrate every accomplishment, no matter how small. By romanticizing your life and appreciating every win, you add meaning to daily experiences. Expressing deep gratitude for your partner’s efforts and immersing yourself in positive moments enhances your quality of life and relationship satisfaction. Romanticize life's positives as much as you do the negatives – it'll bring a harmonious balance.

7. Be Real With Each Other

Honest, vulnerable conversations are essential. Communicate your struggles, needs, and boundaries openly. By revealing your true feelings, you foster deeper intimacy and connection. This transparency helps both partners adjust their expectations and support each other better through challenging times.
